The Automatician is a first person puzzle game that lets the player build Rube Goldberg Machines. The game takes place in a mansion during the Victorian times. Those who enter will be tested on their creativity and ingenuity, with tons of contraptions to create, grounds to explore and secrets to uncover.

The Automatician began development in August 2015, with the express purpose to create a puzzle game that would maximize immersion and purpose, allowing players to build something for a goal beyond simply clearing a stage in order to do it all over again. Players would be able to build their own Rube Goldberg Machines, and solve problems in multiple different ways. This concept was then pitched to 22 fellow students, who came on board to develop the game as part of their NHTV university curriculum. The game is currently under development, and is expected to release in Q1 2017.

  • Hexagon-based Puzzles: Place Hex-based machine parts on the field in order to create a chain reaction that connects the start and the end of the puzzle in order to complete it.
  • First Person Exploration: The entire mansion will be open for exploration, players will be handsomely rewarded for thoroughly investigation all the nooks and crannies.
  • Streamlined Environmental Puzzles: Pick up to 4 items from your surroundings at a time, and use them at the correct moments to solve environmental puzzles.
  • Victorian England Setting: The game is set in an alternate Victorian England where Rube Goldberg Machines were invented by “The Automatician”, a man who, after claiming fame and fortune with his contraptions, mysteriously disappeared after a horrible accident.
  • NPC Interaction: Whodo’s, the mysterious inhabitants of the mansion, are the primary source of information. They can be pried for information through dialogue and will be sure to reveal interesting clues.
  • Physics-based animations: Combine machine parts in a variety of ways, and find out what sort of interesting effects you can create.
  • Tobii EyeX Integration: The Automatician has been built from scratch with Tobii EyeX in mind. The Eyetracker can be used for a variety of different purposes, from starting a conversation with eye contact, to controlling the HUD and menus. These and many more features are being implemented in The Automatician.
